This competition was organized by Persatuan Pemandu Bot Pelancong Tasik Temenggor which collaboration with Majalah Pancing. Michael Lim, the marketing manager for TCE Sports, Simon Lee, a hardcore angler and myself participated in this event under team TCE Sports.

A total 16 teams participated in this event, where most of the teams are from tackle companies such as MGFA, Haiyen, Session Tackle and Siow Chang (Sure Catch) and few fishing club such from Kuala Lumpur and Johor. This event was even better than the one held last year as there are more contestants and they come as nationwide and even from neighboring country, Singapore.

The draw lot system was used to identify the boat, boatman and fishing location.

The fishing competition lasts for 3 days, whereby the first and second day was chosen by the organizer and it was based on draw lots. For the location, it was quite unfavorable for us as lady luck was not with us.

As for the boat was a huge and comfortable but is not very suitable. We prefer a smaller boat, which is easier to paddle and has lower vibration and noise impact to the waters. As the boat is huge, it’s quite difficult to ask the boatman to paddle us to the target. When we reached our target spot, the fish has already left.

The first 2 days, our fishing locations were not so productive for toman fishing. With these two location (Sg. Kenarong and Sg. Papan), our team only managed to catch juveniles tomans ranging 1 kg size and there are less sign of sebarau, due to hot weather. Most of the time for sebarau is morning session where the water is cooling and higher “frenzy” activities.

Only for the last day, the fishing location was open for participants. We had directed the boatman to our favourite fishing spot. It was the right place as we hit a numbers of tomans but all are not in size for competition, ranging below 3kg toman. After 2 hours of hunting we finally managed to find a school of baby toman. We knew the mama toman is around and we try to cast and cast many times. The school of baby toman swam elsewhere and we followed closely. Finally, Michael Lim strikes and hits the mama toman!! Bingo!!.

It was a good fight which has a good feel of the Steez reel and Ardito 6” rod. The rod and reel action was fantastic and it gives a good combination. It lasts for 10mins fight and luck was not on our side either. The line snapped and it went away. The mama toman was estimated to be around minimal of 5kg size, looking at the way the mama toman movement and our experience.

As conclusion, the average catches during these 3 days competition was not so productive and encouraging. This might be due to the hot weather but heavily cloud seeming to rain. This will cause the atmosphere pressure lower which make the fish too passive especially toman.

Anyway, it was a good experience and enjoying trip at Belum forest reserve. We will return to hunt for more toman and sebarau.

Product Report.

Rod : Team Seahawk Infinity 10-25lb 6’3”

Reel : Daiwa Z2020

Line : Finn Line P.E 3

Rod : Team Seahawk Infinity 10-25lb 6’6”

Reel : Daiwa Zillion Type R

Line : Team Seahawk X-Pro P.E.2

I have tested the first set which is Daiwa Z2020 with pairing the Infinity rod 6’3”. Casting wise this combination was superb for long casting technique. The 3D setting for Long Cast Mode really help this reel to achieve long casting distance. This reel is much better than Steez model except it weight slightly heavier by 100gm (265gm). But, I don’t think it be a minus factor for this reel. I strongly feel this reel is good for toman fishing which required the anglers to throw the big size lure and cast very far. The drag system also very good with it 6.5kg drag can easily control toman from snagging under the log.

For the rod, the blank action for Infinity rod was best for toman fishing. During this trip, I have a chance to test 2 rods which is 6’3” and 6’6”. The difference of these two rod by 3 inches only, but the casting of these rod have make no difference. Suppose the 3 inches difference should extend the top tip rod. But this 6’6” rod was extend 1.5 inches on the top and 1.5 inches on the bottom (reel seat handle).

Infinity 6’3”

Infinity 6’6” (current model)

Suggested Infinity 6’6”

By doing this, the new design for 6’6” Infinity rod can be used for top water application such as popping and walk-the-dog action.
